Motion Identity

In a constantly evolving world, our news is changing, with the way the media shares and presents it shifting rapidly. RNZ is moving with change, creating an online presence that signifies its position as one of the most trusted news sources in New Zealand. A constant stream of information means navigating an online presence requires consistency and a firm hold on identity to clearly badge where the content is from. Our motion identity had a job to do. Showing the strength and integrity of RNZ’s journalism was crucial while following the same rule: use motion as an accent rather than an exclamation mark, with animation needing to supplement information rather than distract from it - to allow clear communication of the news itself. With a suite of adjustable assets for the in-house journalists at RNZ - stories and current events can be easily identifiable.

Motion

Our Approach

To stay true to the notion of a ‘supportive’’ motion identity, we designed a focused, ‘no-frills’ system that heroes the journalism and story-telling that RNZ has become renowned for. Building on the iconic elements of RNZ’s identity, putting it to work whilst drawing on the meaning of its inherent elements. RNZ’s motion identity stems from the Tōhu device itself which gently unfurls but never reverses back into itself - able to seep into and support the content, branding the media to help identify the news provider. The motion velocity of all of our assets follows the ‘resonance’ device: quickly animating into but easing on landing so each animated asset is concise yet graceful.

Subtle animations, such as underlined systems and simple slides, are effective in enhancing, not overtaking the information. Breaking news now shifts in quickly alongside imagery, to indicate urgency while resisting the temptation of the animation being the main attraction. All motion assets were delivered to client in a format that is easily accessible and interactive, allowing ease of access for journalists to assist in telling their stories.

Alongside the set of interactive motion templates, we created a set of rules that are focused on the concept of motion amplifying journalism and the stories RNZ tells. Rules such as no motion blur on animation assets and minimal use of supplementary animation to ensure focus on the information being provided.
